Student Profile

Rachel Deane
MFA, Art Studio

Rachel Deane, born in Atlanta, Georgia, is an artist who uses materials, techniques, and histories from painting to create three-dimensional environments. These environments deploy the use of intricate pattern, repetitive shape, bold color, and ornamentation in order to create density that encourages viewer exploration. Deane writes modern-day folklores that examine dating culture, female sexuality, and trauma, which she uses as source material. She engages directly with the characters she writes, often assuming their identity and makes from their point-of-view. Her immersive work allows viewers to partake in the world of surreal narratives, and witness the labor of trying to understand and heal wounds made by trauma.
