Second-year undergraduate student Jason Chen is a physics major
and member of the UC Davis Concert Band. On March 8, the Concert
Band will premiere ”Noctilucence,” a composition by
Chen, at Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing
Arts.
UC Davis Concert Band—offered all three
quarters—is directed by Pete Nowlen, and is a
wind-symphony sized group of about 55 musicians, for which an
audition is required.
University Campus Band—offered only in Winter
and Spring quarters—and is open to all students and community
members without an audition. Independent study credit is
sometimes available.
Meetings and rehearsals for the UC Davis Concert Band
Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:10 to 6:00 pm in Room 105, Music
Building.
Rehearsal times for the University Campus Band
Fridays, 4:00–6:00 pm in Room 105, Music Building.
To be flexible in meeting various possible
scenarios the UC Davis Concert Band will prepare large
chamber wind repertoire plus selections from the Brain Music
Flex Band Series. Final repertoire selections will be made
as the class roster develops. Here are some samples and
possibilities.
Preparation of chosen repertoire will take place in a combination
of on-line sessions and (if possible) small in-person rehearsals.
On-line class sessions will initially focus on important elements
of preparing the piece. Common stylistic issues, practice
techniques, etc.
A plan will be in place for completely virtual rehearsal and
performance in case that proves necessary, so a reference
recording will be prepared for each piece.
The UC Davis Concert Band Program has existed on the campus for
more than 50 years, performing in commencements, ceremonies, and
its own concerts.
The UC Davis Concert Band is an auditioned wind-symphony sized
group of about 55 musicians and plays during the
Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters. Both groups are
open to all students, professors, alumni, and community members.
The Concert Band Program is proud to include students from over
30 majors and minors on campus.
