Fields of interest: Ancient Mesoamerican art and writing;
colonial and contemporary Maya textiles and dance; performance
theory; post-colonial theory; structuralism and semiotics
Julie McGilvray, academic advisor for the Arts Group Advising
Center, received a M.S. degree in Career Counseling from
California State University, Sacramento. Julie was an intern
during the 2014-2015 year at the UC Davis Internship and Career
Center, facilitating workshops and providing career advising to
graduate students and postdoctoral scholars seeking careers
beyond academia. Her previous work experience includes over 12
years of experience in the career transition services, and
providing career advising to diverse population of adults in
career transition from many different career paths. Previously,
she has worked for outplacement organizations in the SF Bay Area
and Sacramento, and a Sacramento non-profit supporting homeless
women and children become self-sustainable. Julie has a passion
for assisting individuals to achieve educational and career
goals.

Barbara Olivier is one of the undergraduate program coordinators
and academic advisor in the Arts Group Advising Center. Her
previous work experience has been extensive in the public and
private sector with a vast range of administrative and clerical
duties and responsibilities, which has led her to UC Davis. She
has held various positions within the University, beginning as a
senior secretary in the temp pool and had led her to begin her
career in advising in 2002. Barbara has held positions in
Political Science/International Relations, as well as Languages
and Literatures, before accepting a position with the Music
Department. Her main focus is assisting undergraduates with their
academic and future career goals.
B.A., Whittier College -- Art History and English Literature
Samantha Cruz graduated with honors from Whittier College in
2017, earning a B.A. in Art History and English Literature. While
at Whittier College, she was awarded the Outstanding Student in
Art History award in 2016, and served as Vice President for the
college’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English
Honors Society. She previously interned at the Muckenthaler
Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA as an Arts Education
Associate.
Amanda recently graduated from CSU Sacramento where she
studied Art History. At CSUS, she was awarded the Raymond W. and
Joyce Witt Scholarship in 2016. At UC Davis, she intends to study
the role of women in art production as subjects, artists or
patrons.
University of California, San Diego, B.A., Art History and Criticism
Wei Rodriguez earned her B.A. in Art History from UC San
Digeo. Her primary interest of study and research in the field is
in modern/contemporary Chinese art, especially in the impact of
colonial modernity on visual culture. Her undergraduate honors
thesis focused on the early life and professional career of
Guan Zilan, a female artist who was active during the
mid-Republican era. While Wei continues her study
at UC Davis, she will intern at the Pence Gallery and
the Crocker Museum.
California State University, Sacramento, B.S. Business Administration
Darya Ryan was born in Siberia, Russia. She earned her B.A. in
Business Administration (Management Information Systems) from
California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). Her primary
interest of study is the iconoclast art culture of post-Soviet
Russia. She is interested in the notion of unrestricted creative
idea and its potential to impact and transform the contemporary
world. Darya’s photography has been published in National
Geographic, Social Documentary Network, and the Edge of
Humanity magazine.
B.A., University of California, Berkeley -- History of Art
Emily received her B.A. in the History of Art from the University
of California, Berkeley in 2017, earning High Honors in the
History of Art and Distinction in General Scholarship. Before
beginning her M.A., Emily worked in the Education Department of
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and she has previously
interned in education departments at The Frick Collection and the
de Young Museum.
Dada Wang was born in Beijing, China. She earned her B.A. in Art
History from Macalester College. Her undergraduate honors thesis
explored the sociopolitical significance of the works of Chinese
performance artists Zhang Huan, Ma Liuming, and He Yunchang. Her
primary interest of study is the visual culture of contemporary
China, and she is particularly interested in how globalized
transformations of the art world have disrupted the
center-periphery model of traditional art historical
inquiries.
Selena graduated in 2017 from UCLA with majors in both Classical
Civilizations and Art History. Her undergraduate honors thesis
analyzed the anatomical drawings of Michelangelo Buonarotti and
Leonardo da Vinci, and her focus as a graduate student is on
female representation in Ancient Mediterranean art.
