DRA 185B: Location and Listening
Fall Quarter 2021
Location and Listening: Site-Specific Sound Experiences and Performance Practice
Participation in the class is also participation in the creation of the creative work: the entire class will participate in the creation of the finished pieces. This class and creation process will be led by Annie Saunders, director and creator of interdisciplinary performance works, and her frequent sound design, creation and technology collaborator Jackie! Zhou. The quarter exploration is offered as a combination of in-person and remote sessions, mirroring the creative process, offering students an insight into the professional creative process both in form and content. Class work will include instruction on the theory and background of sound-based creative practice and the essential qualities of liveness: synchronicity, interactivity, temporality, space-specificity and magic. Saunders and Zhou will reverse-engineer their multiple collaborations from start to finish with students, and will mentor the creative groups in the production processes to create their finished works.
For insight into Saunders’ project, read this recent article in The New York Times.
