“Circulation and Transformation: Gengzhi Tu in Sino-European Visual Exchange”
Visiting Scholar in Art History Talk
Yiyue Sun, an artist and scholar specializing in Chinese painting and art history, will give a Visiting Scholar in Art History Talk, presented by the Departments of Art and Art History and East Asian Studies. The talk is Wednesday, April 22 at 3:15 p.m. in Everson 148.
This talk takes the famed set of paintings, Gengzhi Tu (Illustrations of Tilling and Weaving) as a case study to explore its transformation across different material media during its circulation in Europe. It examines how the image was reproduced and reinterpreted in new visual contexts. The presentation also discusses how European painting techniques and visual experience influenced the spatial structure and figure representation of Gengzhi Tu in the Qing court. By bringing these two directions together, the talk highlights the visual reconstruction of the image within Sino-European interactions.
Sun’s research focuses on Sino-foreign exchanges and the visual culture of Late Imperial China. She has participated in major exhibitions, earning recognition for her art work, and she has authored several scholarly works, including her thesis on the East-West artistic interactions of Lang Shining. Currently pursuing her Ph.D. at Southeast University, she is researching media dissemination in Ming-Qing art and intellectual culture. She is also pursuing advanced studies on cultural dissemination, digital humanities, and art evaluation, thereby contributing to broader discussions in the field.
