Composition/Theory Portfolio Requirements
Portfolio Submission Requirements
Students are admitted to the composition track by submitting and
passing an Entry Level Portfolio, which is at the end of
each Winter Quarter.Second- and third-year undergraduates
are strongly encouraged to make sure they have met this
entry requirement.Submission of Junior and Senior Portfolio
materials is not allowed by students who have not been
accepted into the Composition Track.Unless specifically
arranged by composition faculty members under special
circumstances, no appeal process is allowed for those who
fail to be admitted to the composition track with the Entry
Level Portfolio.
Deadlines
For all submissions: March 4, 2013, to Mika Pelo or Kurt Rohde. Submissions must be made in person or deposited in the mailboxes of these faculty members. No emailed submissions will be accepted under any circumstances. Deadline for score, parts and concert program info for works on undergraduate composers concert: May 16, 2013, to Mika Pelo or Kurt Rohde. No emailed submissions under any circumstances.
Format
You must submit a legible paper copy of your compositions along with a submission form. Scores should be bound. In addition, please indicate when the music was written, and with which professor you have worked.
Do not submit the original manuscript or scores. Do include the submission form.
Undergraduate Composers Concert
The Undergraduate Composers Concert will be held during noontime shows January 17 and May 16 in Room 115, Music Building. Outstanding works by composition track students at all levels will be considered for this concert and selected by the composition faculty.
Entry Requirements
In order to be accepted to the composition track, students should submit not later than at the end of the student’s second year:

a completed minuet and trio (or equivalent exercise) from 6C and
-
a free composition for any instrumentation, for electronics, or for a combination of both
Junior Year Portfolio
You can only submit a Junior Portfolio if you have passed your Entry Portfolio. During the student’s junior year, at least one more composition for any instrumentation, for electronics, or for a combination of both should be added to the above to constitute a Junior Year Portfolio.
The composition faculty must supervise the submitted works during the creation process in such courses as MUS 101, MUS 103, MUS 107, and MUS 199. The review panel will decide whether or not the student’s work is sufficiently advanced to continue in the composition track.
Senior Year Portfolio
You can only submit a Senior Portfolio if you have passed your Junior Portfolio. The final portfolio should be completed during the student’s senior year and should contain three pieces for varying instrumentation, for electronics, or for a combination of both. At least one piece should be for small ensemble. The composition faculty must supervise the submitted works during the creation process in such courses as MUS 103, MUS 107, and MUS 199. The review panel will decide whether or not the portfolio satisfies the senior project requirement and will select the best pieces for the Undergraduate Composers Concert.
Senior Honors Track
You can only submit a Senior Honors Track Portfolio if you have passed your Junior Portfolio. Senior Honors Track is only for those composers in their senior year who have been approached by a member of the Music Department Composition Faculty and invited to pursue Senior Honors Track in Composition. Additionally, a Senior Honors Composition Track student must have completed or are in the process of completing the final year of all the course work for the honors program required by the Music Department. The student must have participated in MUS 103 for at least one (preferably two) quarters, have had regular private lessons with a member of the composition faculty for at least one quarter, and must have completed all required theory and history courses in full prior to beginning Senior Honors Track. The Senior Honors Track portfolio submission must include complete original compositions of varied instrumentation and advanced scope, totaling 10–13 minutes. Students wishing to pursue the honors track need to indicate this on their submission form.
