DES180A: Adv Interior Design: Institutional Spaces (4)
Fall 2015, 3D scanning
In Fall 2015, DES 180A offers some truly relevant and cutting-edge educational opportunities. The first assignment is the interior design of Cruess Hall, Phase II.This project is currently being developed by campus planners, but so far only a schematic diagram has been created. Student work will contribute to the “real” discussion of what Ph II contains and how it will look.
Assignment 2 will introduce students to the 3D scanning of buildings. With a grant from the Office of Undergraduate Education and the Merk Family, we have arranged for CyArk–an Oakland based non-profit that specializes in this technology–to come to campus and teach DES 180A students how to scan architecture. Then, students will receive instruction from CyArk staff on converting the point cloud data into interactive 3D models. The subject building will be the historic Enology Lab, and the assignment asks students to transform the building shell into the new Enology and Viticulture Museum at UC Davis.
