Robin Hill and Sam Nichols Collaborate on “Seeing Sound 2″ at Pence Gallery
June 8–July 2, 2019

Robin Hill,  professor of art, and Sam Nichols, associate professor of music, have collaborated on a work that is part of “Seeing Sound 2″ at the Pence Gallery in Davis June 8 – July 2. The work evolved from one they created for ensemble mise-en that was performed in New York in March. During that performance, Hill manipulated translucent slides made of mica behind a back-lit scrim. For the new work, “Humankind is glass,” Hill has made a video of a performance of the visual component, and Nichols created software that plays Hill’s video and accompanies it with a processed version of the sound recordings from the original performance. A computer is simultaneously playing back and scanning the video output, and the visual changes from frame to frame trigger corresponding changes in how the audio files are played back.

Also included in the exhibition are works by Terry Berlier (M.F.A., art, ‘03) and Terry Peterson (M.F.A., art, ‘12).

An opening reception will be held June 14 from 6-9 p.m. The Pence Galley is at 212 D St.
