Guest Lecture by L/C Mural & Design
Location: MedSci 180c

Join us for a free guest lecture by L/C Mural & Design, the collaborative team of Sofia Lacin & Hennessy Christophel. Sofia and Hennessy will speak about life after university for artists and designers: using examples from their own design process as applied to public art commissions, they will discuss “taking your work to the streets.” Additionally, they will offer an overview of the jury selection process in a competition like the recent “Drink Radio” competition sponsored by Capital Public Radio (88.9 KXPR Sacramento). Students enrolled in DES 001 participated in this project, for which some were named finalists. The course is taught by James Housefield.

Lecture details: October 22, 2014, 9-10 am

Limited seating is available. Free and open to the public. Parking available in the adjoining lot with UC parking passes ($9 daily visitor passes available for purchase from yellow vending machines; limited parking meters). We will begin with a group sketching activity from 9-9:05 AM (bring your sketchpads and pens!).

L/C Mural & Design is Sofia Lacin and Hennessy Christophel. Sofia graduated from UC Davis with a double major in Italian and Studio Art; Hennessy’s degree is from UC Santa Cruz. Together they create public art, murals, installations for all kinds of audiences and spaces. They see themselves as inventive designers who define and deepen spaces through color and form. They re-interpret and re-envision spaces to transform environments and develop a beauty and identity that was not there before.

Same Sun is a 14,000 square foot abstract mural and sculpture installation covering a 4 million gallon water tank in Davis, CA. Completed in time for the summer solstice in June 2012, it is the largest public art installation in Davis. Three metal sculptures containing letters, installed along the top of the tank, cast shadows onto the painting below. The letter shadows shift and change throughout the year, coming into alignment with painted letters on the tank during the summer solstice. At that time the shadows reveal the complete phrase “Sol Omnibus Lucet,” Latin for “The Sun Shines Upon Us All.” Same Sun was awarded ‘Project of the Year’ by the American Public Works Association.
