Katherine In-Young Lee is invited to present at the Media and East Asia Project, entitled “The Music of Sound.”

It will take place at the University of Chicago from May 6 to 7, 2016. The Workshop will consist of two panels, one on SOUND and the other on MUSIC. The division is meant to recognize the different methodological approaches brought to bear on these categories, but also to facilitate discussion about the different ways these media circulate within and across cultural borders.

Katherine In-Young Lee is an ethnomusicologist with research interests in East Asia, music and politics, transnational circulations, sound studies, and ethnography. She is intrigued by how analyses of sound can offer reappraisals of past events and contemporary cultural phenomena. In this vein, she has developed research projects that engage various types of “sonic evidence”—from the politicized drumming of dissent to the audible dimensions of a nation branding campaign.
