JAYJAY in Sacramento will present a virtual exhibition of works by the first-year MFAs entitled ”ENDNOTES.” The show, which will begin May 27, will unfold with a series of instagram posts that will take place every other day featuring Havilah Aos, Valerie Arcara, Jesse Aylsworth, Dino Capaldi, Genevra Daley, Mercy Hawkins, Gretchen Lemaistre, and Dani Torvik.

Professor Lucy Puls is participating in the “Hotheads” Tribute Wall at the Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco. Currently online until September 5, 2020, the Catharine Clark Gallery hopes to open the exhibition and gallery to viewers in June.

Muzi Li Rowe and Vincent Pacheco, who received their M.F.A. degree from UC Davis in 2017, have been awarded Ali Youssefi Project residencies in Sacramento. Pacheco (M.F.A., art,’17, B.S., design, ’03) received the WAL residency which will provide an apartment and studio space for three months.

Julia Rigby (MFA 2020) has been included in the online exhibition “Assemblage: The MFA Show” organized by The Olympia Project in New York City.

Roy De Forest, the late, long-time UC Davis art professor, is the subject of a major exhibition at a New York gallery that has received a significant review in The New York Times. “Roy De Forest’s Greatness Shines Even in a Virtual Display”  by Roberta Smith examines the artist’s online exhibition at the Venus Over Manhattan gallery.

Art professor Hearne Pardee and art department alumnae Julia Couzens (M.F.A., ’90) have created public artworks recently unveiled and dedicated in Sacramento.

Alum Elaine K. Ng’s (BA 1999) solo show “OVER/UNDER” at Interloc in Rockland, Maine opened Saturday, January 18. “OVER/UNDER” showcases Ng’s recent work developed from her exploration of materials, patterns, and their relationship to place. Mined from research done in Taiwan during 2017-18, these works combine, abstract, and transform commonplace things, reimagining them in different contexts to offer alternate interpretations of our material surroundings.

On Jan. 17 in conjunction with her solo exhibition, “Annabeth Rosen: Fired, Broken, Gathered, Heaped” at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Rosen, professor of art and art chair, will present “You can only go to a new place once,” exploring the contemporary art world’s rising focus on ceramics.

Professor Darrin Martin is participating in the group show “Recoding CripTech” at SOMArts in San Francisco. This show will be on display from January 24 to February 25, 2020.

Work by Art Studio alumna Jodi Connelly (MFA ’18) is a new exhibition, “Before You Were This Place, You Were Another Place,” at the Verge Center for the Arts.

Alum Gerald Walburg (MA, 1967) has an extensive solo exhibition of metal and ceramic sculptures, paintings and drawings at Artspace 1616 in Sacramento. Walburg, who lives in Sacramento, has created large scale public artworks including “Indo Arch” in downtown Sacramento and has works in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, SFMOMA, the Crocker Art Museum.

Alum Shawn Sullivan (BA, 1991) has been the Sheldon High School animation teacher since 1998. He has also been a mentor to his Elk Grove students, helping many launch into successful careers in the arts, media and the entertainment industry, including performance artist David Garibaldi. Today the mentor and the former student are collaborators on a nonprofit called Creator X which links student artists with practicing professionals.

Work by Associate Professor Shiva Ahmadi, graduate adviser Art Studio, is currently on exhibition at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York. 

Zach Clark, M.F.A. 2018 art studio, has recently published his newest zine “Raised Beds,” about home gardening, collaborating with dirt, and being a person in the city. 

Professor Hearne Pardee’ will have a solo show at the Bowery Gallery in New York entitled “N/S/E/W: Painting|Drawing|Collage.” The show will run from October 1 to October 26, 2019. An opening reception will be held October 3 from 5-8 pm.

The George Adams Gallery in New York is currently showcasing nuclear war-themed works by Robert Arneson, professor emeritus, art and art history, 1962-1992, in a new exhibition.

Alum Jamie Banes (MFA 2007) is participating in the exhibition “Introductions 2019″ at Root Division in San Francisco. This annual juried exhibition will include four of Jamie’s wall sculptures, including two new pieces. Jamie and eleven of the Bay Area’s most promising emerging artists are featured in this show which is running from September 11-28, 2019.

Three of the five artists in the exhibition “Empathy” at the Cosumnes River College art gallery are UC Davis art alumni. Arthur Gonzalez (MFA 1981), Julia Couzens (MFA 1990) and Tavarus Blackmon (MFA 2017) are part of the exhibition on display September 13 through November 21. An opening reception will take place September 13 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

Alum Hedwig Brouckaert (MFA 2005) has a new solo exhibition coming soon. ”Joyrides” will be on display at the Dhaese Gallery in Ghent from September 1 to October 13, 2019.

If you can’t get to Ghent, Hedwig will also be showing at the Consul-General of Belgium Residence in New York City. This September, Hedwig, along with 8 other Belgian artists, will be displaying their work in “Art at the Residence” at the Residence of the Consul-General of Belgium in NYC, 5th Avenue, 10th Floor in Manhattan.
