JAYJAY in Sacramento
will present a virtual exhibition of works by the first-year
MFAs entitled ”ENDNOTES.” The show, which will begin
May 27, will unfold with a series of instagram posts
that will take place every other day featuring Havilah Aos,
Valerie Arcara, Jesse Aylsworth, Dino
Capaldi, Genevra Daley, Mercy Hawkins, Gretchen
Lemaistre, and Dani Torvik.
Alum Zach Clark (MFA 2016) will be on the
Kala Art Institute’s Artist Publications Panel Discussion
this May 30 at 2 pm for Art Kala 2020. Clark and Amy Burek (both
of Chute
Studio) will have a conversation with the artists of the
collaborative Riso Studio to discuss their Art Kala 2020
special publications, Risograph and will share their
experiences with the process.
Professor Lucy Puls is participating in the “Hotheads” Tribute
Wall at the Catharine Clark
Gallery in San Francisco. Currently online until
September 5, 2020, the Catharine Clark Gallery hopes to open the
exhibition and gallery to viewers in June.

The Chain Reaction series was launched in 1986 to celebrate Bay
Area artists. Chain Reaction mimics a chain letter where every
Monday for the eight weeks a new chain is initiated. Each
participant is selected by the featured artist the day
before—artists choosing artists choosing artists.
Alum Joyce Nojima (MFA 2014) is participating in the
exhibit Wander Woman 2.
Curated by Rea Lynn de Guzman, this exhibition explores complex
identity politics such as diaspora, femininity, liminality, and
power dynamics. Artists present work in a diverse range
of artistic media stemming from photo-based conceptual work and
material explorations such as performance, photography, print
media, sculpture, video.
Alum Manuel Fernando Rios (MFA 2011) is featured in a recent
article in Comstock’s Magazine, a
monthly Sacramento-based periodical. Manuel shares his
experiences as a working artist and art instructor in the time of
COVID-19 “Art
Exposed: Manuel Fernando Rios.”
Zen Cohen (MFA 2011) is participating in the virtual launch of
the PS1 Media Arts Co-op. They will be screening of short videos
and follow up with a Q&A of MAC participants.
Muzi Li Rowe and Vincent Pacheco, who received their M.F.A.
degree from UC Davis in 2017, have been awarded Ali
Youssefi Project residencies in Sacramento. Pacheco (M.F.A.,
art,’17, B.S., design, ’03) received the WAL residency which will
provide an apartment and studio space for three months.
Professors Gina Werfel and Hearne Pardee are featured in a recent
article looking at how art studio faculty and students are coping
with online art instruction. In “Remote:
Teaching art online” in Two Coats of
Paint, author Peter Plagens explores how faculty and
students are “venturing into the breach” of this new classroom
experience.
Roy De Forest, the late, long-time UC Davis art professor, is the
subject of
a major exhibition at a New York gallery that has received a
significant review in The New York Times.
“Roy De Forest’s Greatness Shines Even in a Virtual
Display” by Roberta Smith examines the artist’s online
exhibition at the Venus Over Manhattan gallery.
Professor Gina Werfel is participating in the group show
“Pendulum in Time” at LichtundFire in New York. The gallery,
which was closed, has re-opened and will be on view until

Art professor Hearne Pardee and art department alumnae Julia
Couzens (M.F.A., ’90) have created public artworks recently
unveiled and dedicated in Sacramento.
Professor Gina Werfel’s solo exhibition “Conversation” will open
on March 24 at the Prince Street Gallery in New York City.
“Conversation” will be on display until April 18, 2020.
Annabeth Rose, Robert Arneson Endowed Chair in the Department of
Art and Art History, has been named one of five 2020 American
Craft Council Fellows. The council calls her “one of the
preeminent ceramic sculptors in the 21st century.”
The two newest exhibitions at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti
Shrem Museum of Art showcase UC Davis Department of Art and Art
History alumni and emeriti faculty. Both open Jan. 26.
Alum Elaine K. Ng’s (BA 1999) solo show “OVER/UNDER” at
Interloc in Rockland, Maine opened Saturday, January 18.
“OVER/UNDER” showcases Ng’s recent work developed from her
exploration of materials, patterns, and their relationship to
place. Mined from research done in Taiwan during 2017-18, these
works combine, abstract, and transform commonplace things,
reimagining them in different contexts to offer alternate
interpretations of our material surroundings.
MFA Candidate Caz Azevedo (MFA 2020) is participating in the
upcoming group show “Biomythography: Making Visible.”
Curated by alum Jessica Wimbley (MFA 2005) and Chris
Christion, “Biomythography” will be on display from
February 10- March 13, 2020 at the Cerritos College Art
Gallery.
Winter Quarter is a busy time for Professor Robin Hill.
Now through March, Hill has two solo exhibitions in
Sacramento and is in a group show in Stockton.
Alum Mathew Zefeldt (MFA 2011) is participating in a group show
entitled “FutureFuture” at Hair + Nails in Minneapolis. An

Alum Terry Berlier (MFA 2003) will have a solo exhibition at the
Stanford Art Gallery, starting January 22 and running to March
15, 2020. The exhibition titled ”I Am What I Am Not Yet”
references author/philosopher Maxine Green and speaks “to
our enduring, even grasping, pursuit of a sense of
completion.”
Professor Lucy Puls will have a solo show at the Foyer-LA
gallery opening Saturday January 18. ”To_Fall”Freely”
will be on display until February 21. An opening reception will

Alum Angela Willetts and Jamie Banes are showing at the Bedford
Gallery in the group show “The Great Wave: Contemporary Art About

Congratulations to Alum Rosemary Holliday Hall (BA 2013) who will
present her solo exhibition “Encyclia Imagosis” at Paris London
Hong Kong. ”Encyclia Imagosis” will

Alum Hedwig Brouckaert (MFA 2005) is participating in a group
show called “Luxe, Calme, et Volupte” at The Yard. The show,
which began December 12 and will run to March 2020, will have an

The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery and University Art Collection at
Wayne State University is presenting a solo exhibition of the
works of Professor Shiva Ahmadi. The exhibition — “Labyrinths”
— will run from January 16 to March 20, 2020.
Lecturer Deirdre White has a solo show at ampersand
international arts in San Francisco. “Now That My Ladder’s Gone”
will display White’s oil paintings from January 31 to
February 29, 2020.
Professor Darrin Martin is participating in the group show
“Recoding CripTech” at SOMArts in San Francisco. This show will
be on display from January 24 to February 25, 2020.

and Angela Willetts (MFA 2016) are participating in the
group show
“On the Tip of My Tongue” at Carnation Contemporary in
Portland Oregon. The show is co-curated by another alum, Kristin
Hough (MFA 2016).
Art Studio alumni have come together for the exhibition,
“The Resistant Gesture,” now at the Axis Gallery in
Sacramento through Dec. 22. The show was curated by Tavarus
Blackmon (MFA, ‘18) and includes work by Jodi Connelly (MFA ’18)
and Rachel Deane (MFA ‘19).
Alum Gerald Walburg (MA, 1967) has an extensive solo exhibition
of metal and ceramic sculptures, paintings and drawings at
Artspace 1616 in Sacramento. Walburg, who lives in Sacramento,
has created large scale public artworks including “Indo Arch” in
downtown Sacramento and has works in the collections of the
Museum of Modern Art, New York, SFMOMA, the Crocker Art Museum.
“The
Resistant Gesture,” coming soon to the Axis Gallery,
highlights the work of several alum. Curated by Tavarus Blackmon
(MFA 2018), this exhibition features the work of Jodi Connelly
(MFA 2018) and Rachel Deane (MFA 2019),
alongside artists Sydney Acosta, Caiti Chan, Elizabeth
Joy Cord, Hea-Mi Kim, Amy Nathan and Holly Smith.
Alum Xavier Lopez Jr. (MFA 1998) is participating in the
exhibition
“Brighter Future: To be heard. To be seen. To be free,” a
show featuring artworks created by more than 50 local Seattle
artists of color reflecting on freedom.
Alum Shawn Sullivan (BA, 1991) has been the Sheldon High
School animation teacher since 1998. He has also been a
mentor to his Elk Grove students, helping many launch into
successful careers in the arts, media and the entertainment
industry, including performance artist David Garibaldi.
Today the mentor and the former student are collaborators on a
nonprofit called Creator X
which links student artists with practicing professionals.
Alum Julia Elsas (MFA 2009) will perform as Sonic Mud along Kenny
Wollesen, Kirk Knuffke, and Mike Irwin. Julia’s ceramic musical
instruments, which are sculptural as well as functional, will
played live on Sunday, October 27 from 5-7 pm at Relationship.

Alum Mathew Zefeldt (MFA 2011) is participating in the show
“Open World: Video Games & Contemporary Art” at the Akron Art
Museum in Akron, Ohio. “Open World” will be on display at
Akron until February 2, 2020. This exhibitoin will eventually
make its way to the San Jose Museum of Art where it will be in
view from September 10, 2020 to January 10, 2021.
Alum Noah Greene (MFA 2018) is showing in the two-person exhibit
“Never Feels Like a Future” at Tropical
Contemporary in Eugene, Oregon. This site-specific
installation will be on display Saturday October 19 and
October 26 from 1-4 pm. An opening reception will be held on
October 18 from 6-9 pm.

Congratulations to alum Julia Couzens (MFA 1990) who participated
in the 2019 Cheongju Contemporary Craft Biennale in Cheongju,
South Korea. She also addressed the 3rd Academic
Symposium of the Biennale on “Dreaming the Crafts of the Future!”
Alum Danielle Bronson (BA Art History and Art Studio,
2019) will be giving a lecture at the Living Computer Museum and
Labs in Seattle on net.art.
Her talk will take place Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 3-4 pm.

Zach Clark, M.F.A. 2018 art studio, has recently published his
newest zine “Raised
Beds,” about home gardening, collaborating with dirt,
and being a person in the city.
Jodi Connelly, M.F.A. 2018, has received a residency through
the Ali
Youssefi Project. The project includes a residency at the
Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento.
Professor Hearne Pardee’ will have a solo show at the Bowery
Gallery in New York entitled “N/S/E/W: Painting|Drawing|Collage.”
The show will run from October 1 to October 26, 2019. An opening
reception will be held October 3 from 5-8 pm.
Alum Zach Clark’s (MFA 2016) National Monument Press has
just released a new artist book, Kelley
O’Leary’s Collective Geographies based on an Irving
Street Project community mapping 2017-2018 event in San
Francisco. The official release will take place at Black Bird
Bookstore in San Francisco Saturday, September 28 from 7-9 pm.
The George Adams Gallery in New York is currently showcasing
nuclear war-themed works by Robert Arneson, professor emeritus,
art and art history, 1962-1992, in a new exhibition.
Alum Lisa Rybovich Crallé (MFA 2011) is rolling out her next
Heavy Breathing
event for the 2019-2020 season. This weekend kicks off a
7-month series of artist-led workshops organized by Crallé .
“Surrounding Desire” is a two-part workshop led by
Chicago-based artist/scholar Anna Martine Whitehead in
collaboration with Bay Area artist Sofía Córdova.
In 1965, art Professor William Wiley purchased an odd object in a
thrift store and brought it to campus. The Slant Step is a green
linoleum-covered plywood stool with a slanted – and seemingly
nonfunctional – step that has inspired artists for decades at UC
Davis and beyond.

Collect Art Auction and Exhibition is opening in October and
Alum Jamie Banes (MFA 2007) will be participating. Jamie has
contributed The Revisionists to this fundraiser which

Mike Henderson, art professor emeritus, has two major exhibitions
in San Francisco this fall. Henderson taught at UC Davis for
30 years before retiring in 2012. Along with being a painter, he
is also a musician and filmmaker.
Alum Hedwig Brouckaert (MFA 2005) has a new solo exhibition
coming soon. ”Joyrides” will be on display at the Dhaese
Gallery in Ghent from September 1 to October 13, 2019.

Consul-General of Belgium Residence in New York City. This
September, Hedwig, along with 8 other Belgian artists, will be
displaying their work in “Art at the Residence” at the Residence
of the Consul-General of Belgium in NYC, 5th Avenue, 10th Floor
in Manhattan.
Professor Shiva Ahmadi is one of 16 contemporary Iranian artists
participating in the exhibition “A Bridge Between You and
Everything: an Exhibition of Iranian Women Artists” at the
High Line Nine galleries in Chelsea. This show will be on display
until November 2019.

2017, is the first recipient of the Keister & Allen Art Purchase
Prize. The award is a purchase of a student’s artwork for the
collection of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of
Art.
The award was announced at the opening of the “from this
point forward” graduate student exhibition June 1.
“Landscape
Without Boundaries,” opening July 14 at the Jan Shrem and Maria
Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, explores the many ways
artists can approach the landscape. Drawn entirely from the
museum collection, the exhibition includes art by emeriti faculty
members Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, Mike Henderson, Roland
Petersen, Cornelia Schulz, Wayne Thiebaud and William Wiley, and
alumni Deborah Butterfield and Maija Peeples-Bright.
