Esther Luna DeLozier is a Ph.D. candidate in
Ethnomusicology. Currently, she is conducting ethnographic
research examining the value of the live music experience. During
her time at UC Davis, she has cultivated her desire to promote
access to and community in the arts by spearheading community
outreach programs in the music department. As a Mellon Public
Scholar, she collaborated with the California Arts Council
reviewing their public arts grant-making programs. She previously
worked as a recording editor and an assistant producer with
Telarc Records and managed the Audio Department for TNT Latin
America, a division of Time Warner. Ecomusicology, social
anthropology, and public policy concerning the promotion of the
arts through community engagement are among her main interests.
Leanny Muñoz (she/her) is a Ph.D. student at UC
Davis with experience in music performance, secondary and higher
education, and professional development. She received her
master’s degree in musicology (music history) from Louisiana
State University. Her academic research areas are in Latin
American music and cultural diplomacy. As a first-generation
student herself, Leanny has a special interest in providing young
students with the tools necessary to succeed in college or in the
job market.

UC Davis Graduate Student in Music Esther DeLozier has been
named Student of the Month for February, 2020, by the Society for Ethnomusicology
(SEM). SEM will feature Esther as Student of the
Month on their website and Facebook page. Begun in
January of 2019, the recognition highlights research and
accomplishments of its members to the public. Esther’s
dissertation examines the live interactions between artists
and their audiences.
Leaving my country of birth [Venezuela] has expanded my vision
of what it means to be a citizen in and of the world while
pursuing a doctorate in ethnomusicology has increased my
enthusiasm and respect for the cultural and artistic diversity
that is part of that world. As a citizen and a scholar, I
strive to share my appreciation for the arts by promoting their
richness and importance within and beyond [academia].
Esther DeLozier, a graduate student in music, has been appointed
to the 2018 cohort of Mellon Public Scholars. She will be working
with the California Arts Council on a review of their public arts
grant-making programs.
