The UC Davis Symphony Endowment was established by members and
friends in 1992 with the goal of assuring the orchestra’s access
to first-rate teachers and soloists, a handsome orchestral
library, and enhanced opportunities for travel.
The fund supports noon and/or performance concerts in the UC
Davis Department of Music. Joy S. Shinkoskey was the mother
of Deborah Pinkerton and mother-in-law to Bret Hewitt. They
established an endowment to support Noon and/or Performance
Concerts in the UC Davis Department of Music located in the
Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies in the College
of Letters and Science.
The Empyrean Ensemble is a professional new music ensemble in
residence with the music department. Although it’s not offered
as a class for undergraduates, it does collaborate with student
musicians, usually in winter quarter. For more information
please contact the ensemble’s director, Sam
Nichols.
The Jan and Beta Popper Endowed Professorship in
Opera was established with a $500,000 bequest from
the estate of Beta Popper, who died in 2008. Beta and her
husband, the late music professor and conductor Jan Popper, spent
a lifetime together producing opera all over the world, notably
in Asia. Beta, a mezzo-soprano who performed with the San
Francisco Opera, was involved with the UC Davis Department of
Music. Jan was on the UCLA faculty, but assisted many UC
campuses, including UC Davis, as a visiting professor.
