Byron Colborn Nonet
Miles Davis's "Birth of the Cool"

Recital Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center

In 1949 Miles Davis recorded the legendary album “Birth of the Cool,” which helped to grow a new branch in the history of jazz music. ‘Cool’ Jazz is a style of playing which emphasizes a lighter feel and less complexity than ‘Bebop’; which was also a budding style when Miles Davis made this recording. “Birth of the Cool” features a unique-sized 9-piece band, as well as unusual instrumentation, including horn and tuba. The Byron Colborn Nonet breathes new life into this music with some of the Sacramento area’s top musicians.

About the Artists

Byron Colborn is a baritone saxophonist rooted in the jazz tradition, and a prominent figure in the Sacramento music scene. Colborn leads the Element Brass Band (EBB), a New Orleans style 2nd line band that is the premier brass band in Sacramento, and one of the few authentic 2nd line bands on the West Coast. In addition to EBB, Colborn leads the Byron Colborn Big Band, a 17-piece ensemble, and a variety of smaller size combos. Byron also plays regularly with Peter Petty, and is active as a teacher, both privately and with “Bigger Than Us Arts.” Byron grew up in Davis, California, attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and is a former student of renowned saxophonists Mel Martin and George Garzone.
