Pablo Ortiz Opera to Premiere in Argentina
Pablo Ortiz, Distinguished Professor of Music, will have an opera, Kassandra, premiered at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on August 23, with performances until September 1. The opera features text by the Uruguayan playwright Sergio Blanco.
Kassandra is the Greek truth-teller cursed by Apollo to never be believed. The performance is set across multiple universes, and connects the mythology with the present as Kassandra is characterized as a traveler—a migrant marginalized socially, linguistically, and in gender.
The work is a chamber opera with only one character. The role will be sung by Maria Castillo de Lima, who is a transgender soprano.
The production is co-produced by the Centro de Experimentación del Teatro Colón (CETC) and the Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera. Κασσάνδρα will also be performed in Athens, Greece, Sept. 27, 28 and 29.
