Sun Ny Vang
Sun Ny Vang (Moob Leeg) [Blue Hmong] belongs to his mother Huab Xyooj [Houa Xiong] and father Tsaav Ntsuag Vaaj [Jua Vang]. His parents are from present-day Sainyabuli Province, Laos, but he was born and raised on Dakota lands (currently occupied by the city of St. Paul, Minnesota). His current academic pursuits are being routed through Patwin lands (currently occupied by UC Davis) with a Designated Emphasis in Native American Studies under the mentorship of musicologist Jessica Bissett Perea (Dena from Dena’ina Ełnena, ancestral homelands in southcentral Alaska).
Vang enjoys studying kwv txhiaj and lug txaj [Hmong vocal genres of storytelling poetry; chant stories] with his mentor Paaj Zaub Caroline Thao (Moob Leeg) [Blue Hmong] at North Sacramento-based non-profit organization, Hmong Youth and Parents United. His interest in chant stories began as an undergraduate on Anishinaabe lands (currently occupied by CSS), where he was a McNair Scholar under the mentorship of ethnomusicologist Elyse Carter Vosen. His undergraduate research culminated into a thesis that centered on the sound structures of chant stories under the guidance of master Cheng Yang at St. Paul-based Hmong Charter Academy (Hmong College Prep Academy).
