Major: Composition Track

Overview

Composition Track

Students who follow this track demonstrate their creative ability through original composition, arrangement, and orchestration in both tonal and post-tonal mediums. Opportunities for students to have their work performed occur regularly. Through analysis and detailed theoretical training, students learn various compositional tools and effective notation in order to develop their work fully. Students are expected to complete both a Junior and Senior Portfolio.

Students who exhibit exceptional skills in composition and theory may be invited to follow the Honors Track in place of the regular track. Notification is usually given by the composition faculty following the submission of the Junior portfolio. Please note that entry into the honors track is by faculty invitation only.

Note: Priority for enrollment in MUS 103 will be given to students already accepted to the Composition Track. Honors Composition Track students may register for MUS 194 and or MUS 199 only after having completed at least one term (preferably two) of MUS 103, with the approval of the composition faculty and with the agreement of their intended composition instructor.
