Joseph Martin

Joseph Martin is a British composer, performer and teacher based in Davis, California, currently studying in the PhD program in composition at UC Davis. He holds degrees from Cardiff University and the University of Cambridge, and his teachers and mentors include Jeremy Thurlow, Richard Causton, Robert Fokkens, Pedro Faria Gomes and Daniel Bickerton. He has also studied piano performance with Hilary Osmond and Christopher Williams. Joseph has written for ensembles including the Amatis Trio, Carducci Quartet, Sandbox Percussion, Cardiff University Symphonic Winds, and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, among others. His music draws on a number of influences and themes, including identity, nostalgia, and the sense of place. Currently, he is captivated by the interplay of different timbral effects and exploring how rhythmic impulses shape the perception of musical time.
