Valente Lecture: “Music and Transculturation in the Works of Fernando Ortiz”
Raúl Fernandez, Professor Emeritus (UC Irvine)

Room 266, Everson Hall

The Cuban polymath Fernando Ortiz first presented the concept of transculturation in his 1940 book Cuban Counterpoints: Tobacco and Sugar. Professor Fernandez will discuss the later, specific application of the concept by Ortiz in the study of Afro-Cuban music. The presentation will center on transculturation as utilized in the five-volume Los instrumentos de la música afrocubana, and will touch upon Ortiz’s comments on Afro-Cuba jazz.
