Alumna Wins AMS Award
Sarah Justina Eyerly (PhD, musicology and criticism, ‘04) has received the Music in American Culture Award from the American Musicological Society for her book Moravian Soundscapes: A Sonic History of the Moravian Missions in Early Pennsylvania (Indiana University Press, 2020).
In the book, Eyerly knits together ecomusicology and sound studies, religious and Native American studies, offering insights born of archival research, the embodied experience of singing and listening, and active collaboration with indigenous interlocutors.
The Music in American Culture Award honors a book of exceptional merit that both illuminates some important aspect of the music of the United States and places that music in a rich cultural context. The goal of this award is to recognize the best writing on music in American culture, regardless of the source or intended audience of that writing.
