This staging of The Grapes of Wrath, the story of tenant
farmers fleeing the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression in
pursuit of jobs, dignity and a future, is inspired by this 75th
anniversary year since the publication of John Steinbeck’s epic
novel.
Granada Artist-in-Residence Miles Anderson directs with a mixture
of original music and traditional American folk songs, and sets
and lighting by internationally renowned designer Thomas J. Munn.
There will be an audience talkback with director, cast, crew, and
designers immediately following the performance on Friday, March
7. There will be a talkback with scholars after the performance
on Thursday, March 13.
The Department of Theatre and Dance will be hosting an all-day
interdisciplinary Grapes of
Wrath Symposium on Friday, March 7, to explore the work
directly as well as the larger social, cultural and historical
issues it raises.
The UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance will host The Grapes
of Wrath Symposium on Friday, March 7, to explore John
Steinbeck’s work directly as well as the larger social, cultural
and historical issues it raises, while celebrating this 75th
anniversary year since the publication of the epic novel. The
symposium, open to the public and free-of-charge, will be held in
Lab A at Wright Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Miles Anderson has been acting on stage and screen for many
years. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he recently
completed his third season at the Old Globe Shakespeare Festival
in San Diego where his roles have twice won the San Diego Theatre
Critics Circle Craig Noel Award for Outstanding Lead Performance
in a Play: Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and King
George in The Madness of George III.

Thomas J. Munn, an internationally recognized Lighting Designer,
has designed for theatre, opera, ballet, television, videos, and
industrials. A graduate of Boston University School of Fine and
Applied Arts in Design, he made his Broadway debut in 1974
designing scenery for Brightowerby Dore Schary.
