Spring Awakening Auditions

Auditions are open only to UC Davis students, faculty, and staff, unless members of the public are specifically invited.

Auditions are held periodically throughout the year, up to six months prior to performances. If you would like to be notified of future auditions, sign up for the UC Davis Theatre & Dance e-Newsletter. Be sure to click “auditions” on the sign-up form.

AUDITIONS FALL 2013

Spring Awakening
Directed by Granada Artist-in-Residence Stafford Arima

Performing in Main Theatre November 21-24 and December 5-7

All auditioners must sign up for a Vocal Auditions time slot and also must attend the Dance Auditions.

Vocal Auditions: Monday September 30, 6-10pm & Tuesday October 1, 6-8:30pm, Wright Hall Arena Theatre

Sign up for a 5-minute slot in Art 101. Please bring 16 bars of a pop/rock song along with headshot, resume and book in case the directors ask to see something else.

Dance Auditions: Tuesday, October 1, 8:30-10pm, Wright Hall Arena Theatre

Please dress to dance.

Callbacks: Wednesday, October 2, 6-10pm, Wright Hall Arena Theatre

By invitation only. Those called back will be told at their vocal audition, and will be handed songs and/or sides to prepare. Please bring your book in case the directors ask to see something else. Be prepared to sing music from the show provided at your audition.

Rehearsals Begin Saturday, October 5.

Cast list:

ADULT MAN

Plays a variety of rigid adult roles. Characters include: HERR SONNENSTITCH, the boys’ teacher; HEADMASTER KNOCHENBRUCH; HERR NEUMANN, Ilse’s father; HERR RILOW, Hanschen’s father; HERR STEIFEL, Moritz’s father; FATHER KAULBACH; DOCTOR VON BRAUSEPULVER; HERR GABOR, Melchior’s father; and SCHMIDT.
Range: D3 – F4

ADULT WOMAN

Plays a variety of rigid adult roles. Characters include: FRAU BERGMAN, Wendla’s mother; FRAULEIN KNUPPELDICK; FRAULEIN GROSSEBUSTENHALTER; FRAU GABOR, Melchior’s mother; and FRAU BESSELL, Martha’s mother.
Range: D3 – A4

ANNA

A German schoolgirl and Martha’s best friend. Optimistic and a bit naive, she has a difficult time understanding Martha’s trials.
Range: E3 – C5

ERNST

A schoolmate of Melchior’s. Naive and easily manipulated, which allows him to fall in love with Hanschen. 

Range: Ab2 – A4

GEORG

A clumsy schoolmate of Melchoir’s. He is overcome with his feelings for his older piano teacher. Range: Ab2 – D5

HANSCHEN

A rather narcissistic schoolmate of Melchior’s. He is comfortable with his own sexuality and uses his looks and intelligence to captivate Ernst. He can be humorous at times. 

Range: Ab2 – D5 

ILSE

Martha’s sister, who was also abused and has run away from home to live in an artists’ colony as a Bohemian. She reaches out to her old friend Moritz in the last moments of his life.
Range: E3 – E5

MARTHA

A schoolgirl who faces constant physical abuse from her father. She harbors a secret crush towards Moritz.
Range: E3 – E5

MELCHIOR

A smart, charismatic and headstrong boy who refuses to bow down to society’s rules. An atheist and radical student. He knows much more than the others because of what he reads in books and is able to see the corruption in society. Struggles with his intense feelings for Wendla and his awakening sexual urges.
Range: G2 – B4

MORITZ

Melchior’s best friend, a troubled, nervous and intense student. He desperately tries to please his father, but always seems to disappoint him. His haunting sexual dreams and academic failures eventually drive him to suicidal thoughts.
Range: C3 – A4 

OTTO

A classmate of Melchior’s. He struggles with feelings he considers inappropriate (specifically a dream he had about his mother). 

Range: Ab2 – D5

THEA

Wendla’s best friend. A schoolgirl who tries to stay innocent and pure.
Range: E3 – E5

WENDLA

Innocent. With every passing day, she grows more curious about the world around her and her changing body. Both vulnerable and a willing participant in her evolution. Explores her newly-found sexuality with Melchior.
Range: E3 – E5
