Project: ARTspace is presenting a solo exhibition of new work by alum Hedwig Brouckaert (M.F.A., ‘05). The show – “Peel (America)” — will feature a new site specific installation of found porcelain tiles built up with layered paper collages from glossy magazines depicting images of skin.

Professor Darrin Martin is featured in the exhibition “Resistance & Respiration” at the Contemporary Calgary which takes inspiration from the scholarship of Jean-Thomas Tremblay and his book

Art 113 students welcomed the public to their group show “Snowball for Sale!” on Dec. 7 in the Basement Gallery.

The exhibition featured works from twenty-one students in ART113  Interdisciplinary Studio, a course led by The California Studio visiting professor Katya Grokhovsky. The exhibition explored themes of memory and identity through found object mixed media installation works.

Shiva Ahmadi will give an artist talk at Royal Ontario Museum in connection to the exhibition “Being & Belonging.”  A moderated Q&A hosted by Mohamad Tavakoli-Targhi, with participation by exhibition curator Fahmida Suleman, will follow the presentation. This event is on zoom but registration is required.

Sofía del Pedregal (M.F.A., ‘22) is in residency for the months of November and December at the L’Aquila Reale: Centro d’Arte e Natura di Civitella di Licenza in Italy. Sofía del Pedregal and fellow LaVALLE resident André Bousquet are developing a research project that documents the works of women artists who  participated in the Grand Tour in Tivoli and Aniene Valley where del Pedregal and Bousquet are in residence.

“Apostrophe,” a new group show at Personal Space, opens Dec. 3 and features several artists with UC Davis connections. The Vallejo-based gallery was recently opened by alum Lisa Rybovich Crallé (M.F.A., ‘11) to highlight the work of local emerging, under recognized, and mid-career artists.

The 14th Shanghai Biennale “Cosmos Cinema” opened Nov. 8 highlighting works that reflect on diverse cosmologies and microcosmic realities and the different ways in which humanity interacts with and understands the cosmos. Professor Beatriz Cortez’s sculpture “El Caracol,” a spiraling structure inspired by the Mayan observatory at Chichen Itza, is featured in this year’s show. “El Caracol” engages with the ancient Maya practice of observing the cosmos as a way of understanding time beyond the limits of a single human life. 

In conjunction with the exhibition “Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America,” Professor Shiva Ahmadi will join curator La Vaughn Belle in a dialogue on equality, free speech, and democracy. This event is the next installment of the Rising Sun Artist/Curator series, Multiple Suns Part II organized by the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

“Robin Hill: All That You Touch” opens November 11 at the Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson, New York. The solo show will be accompanied by a catalog with an essay by poet Iris Cushing. Hill was awarded a publication assistance grant from the UC Davis’s Office of Research and the College of Letters and Science for the development of the catalog.

Ilopango, the Volcano that Left journeyed from the Storm King Art Center to the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, NY earlier this week, taking the scenic route up the Hudson River. Professor Beatriz Cortez’ time-based installation motored up the Hudson on fireboat John J. Harvey, stopping along the way at various spots for public viewing. Ilopango’s arrival was met with a welcome gathering at the Federal Lock and Dam in Troy. 

Rachel Maryam Smith will perform her Tuna Can Cabaret #3 — a 60-seat live recorded concert in the round — with Bassist Dan Robbins and Drummer Steve Robertson on Saturday, Nov. 4.

A recent art studio alum, Smith (M.F.A., ‘20) is now a practice-as-research doctoral scholar at University of California, Davis writing and practicing her  “Bubble Theory.”

“Tell the Bees” opens at b. sakata garo and features new paintings and works on paper by alum Patricia Altschul (B.A., ‘80, M.F.A., ‘82). 

“Tell the Bees” is on view from Nov. 1 through Dec.2, 2023 with an opening reception on Nov. 9 and 11 from 5-7 p.m.

Grace Munakata (B.A., M.F.A., ‘85) will show new paintings that reveal her delight and concern for nature in the exhibition ”Biology of Flight” at the Anglim/Trimble gallery in San Francisco.

“Grace Munakata: Biology of Flight” opens Nov. 4 and runs to Dec. 23, 2023. A reception will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 4-6 pm.

The San Francisco Arts Commission’s (SFAC) new group show “Transcending Physicality: The Essence of Place” features artists whose work explores the complicated concept of “place” and the interplay of relationships and interactions that shape and define places. Curated by artist and educator Minoosh Zomorodinia includes work by alum Kelley O’Leary (M.F.A., ‘22), Alex Arzt, Ebti, S.

Art studio major Alice Herbert, now in her fourth year at Davis, welcomes the feedback and guidance that comes from visiting artists. Herbert is enrolled in Art 113 this quarter taught by Katya Grokhovsky, a visiting professor in the UC Davis Department of Art and Art History. Grokhovsky’s residency in art studio is made possible by The Manetti Shrem California Studio, a program supported by longtime arts benefactors Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem.
