Congratulations to Nicole Anderson (M.F.A., ‘25), recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation award! 

The Wayne Thiebaud Foundation has donated 12 works to the UC Davis Fine Arts Collection that originated in the personal collection of the late Department of Art and Art History Professor Emeritus (1961-1991). 

Artwork by world-renowned 20th-century luminaries such as Willem De Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, Giorgio Morandi, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso is part of the generous gift.

Professor emeritus Lynn Hershman Leeson embarks on a transformative journey through time, identity, and the future of human existence with her latest exhibition, “Anti-Aging.” This is the artist’s third solo show with Bridget Donahue Gallery and it presents a culmination of Hershman Leeson’s decades-long exploration of this concept.

Alum Will Maxen’s (M.F.A., ‘23) upcoming opening of “And the Land Stands Still” marks Maxen’s inaugural showcase with the UTA Artist Space and his first-ever showing in New York. The show will delve into the complexities of the mixed-race experience by drawing from the artist’s personal experience and historical sources to explore connections between one’s environment and sense of belonging.

The 62nd Ann Arbor Film Festival will present a free encore screening of the program “What Are Words For?” on Sunday, April 7, 4  p.m. at the Michigan Theater.  The program, curated by Professor Darrin Martin, is available now in the online festival through April 7. 

Alum Emilie Kim (B.A. art studio ‘23) is featured in an exhibition in this years NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) conference in Richmond, Virginia. Kim is an M.F.A. candidate in Ceramics at SUNY New Paltz. “Multiple Landscapes” explores the works of faculty, alumni, and M.F.A. from the ceramics program at SUNY New Paltz. 

“Multiple Landscapes” is on view from Mar. 20-22 at the Coalition Theater, 8 W. Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia.

Muzi Li Rowe (M.F.A., ‘17) began using simple tools to create marks on paper as a way to process grief after her mother’s sudden passing. Since then, she has been making drawings as a regular studio practice, while experimenting with various types of mediums and materials, and using drawing as a meditative practice.

Whitney Vangrin (M.F.A., ‘22) will premiere a new performance at The Lab in San Francisco on Friday, Mar 1.  Whitney’s performance — “Breath into Doe” — is featured alongside performances by Robbie Trocchia and Nicki Duval, and Sebastian Rios-Sialer. ”In “Breath into Doe,” Whitney’s performance embodies somatic principles, metaphorically suggesting life-saving measures by breathing air into yeast dough via surgical tubing.

Jada Haynes (art studio and design, B.A., ‘22) will present recent work in their exhibition “Silently Violent: Jada Haynes” at the WAL Public Market Gallery.

This is Haynes’ first solo show in Sacramento and will feature their new fiber sculpture which they utilizes fiber to explore transformation, resilience and Black queer identity. “Silently Violent” will be on view from March 1 – March 24 with an opening reception on Friday, March 1 from 5-8 pm.

Jade Vega-Fernandez (B.A., ‘23) will present “I’m Not Entirely Here, I’m Not Entirely There” — her first solo show — at the Herger Gallery.

Before studying art studio at UC Davis, Vega-Fernandez studied art at Solano Community College, and The Herger Gallery, a student run gallery at Solano CC, has invited her back to feature her new work.

Residency Art Gallery will be represented by alum Will Maxen (M.F.A., ‘23) in the 2024 edition of the Felix Art Fair. “I’ll Be With You As You Go” features Maxen’s newest works which continues his ongoing exploration of family relationship and dynamics with the use of personal and historic archival images and memories.

Foundations is a seasonal online fair curated by Artsy that highlights new works from galleries featuring emerging artists. This year’s fair includes more than 130 galleries from 36 countries including Chili Art Projects, a London based artist run gallery that has included Will Maxen (M.F.A., ‘23) in their Winter Edition program.

Congratulations to Hedwig Brouckaert (M.F.A., ‘05), a 2024 AIM Fellow.

AIM is a professional development fellowship for promising artists based in NYC. Artists accepted into the program complete a nine-month curriculum designed to impart the practical knowledge needed to sustain and grow a creative practice in the art industry today. Led by a distinguished faculty of art-world professionals, courses cover a wide range of topics including finance, law, media management, and writing.

Professor Beatriz Cortez has been invited to the La Biennale di Venezia – “Stranieri Ovunque — Foreigners Everywhere.” The 60th International Art Exhibition will be curated by Brazilian curator Adriano Pedrosa and will be on view from April 20 to November 24, 2024, at the Giardini and Arsenale venues.
