- Monday: 9 a.m.–12 p.m., 1–5 p.m.
- Tuesday: 9 a.m.–12 p.m., 1–5 p.m.
- Thursday: 9 a.m.–12 p.m., 1–5 p.m.
- Friday: 9 a.m.–12 p.m., 1–5 p.m.
Required orientation during first week (for first-time students).
Safety Training
We start with an in-person safety training and orientation to the department. This covers safe practices in all Costume Spaces as well as safe usage of hand and power tools and other shop equipment.
Production Support
Students first complete a sampler of hand and machine sewing techniques. Once finished they begin focusing on projects generated by costume needs for the quarter productions. Student learning is reinforced by putting their knowledge into practice by executing alterations and creating garments. Students already exhibiting advanced skills are paired with more complex projects to encourage further development.
Advanced Training
Advanced hands-on training is available in all areas of costuming including but not limited to patterning, draping, tailoring, millinery, corsetry, period costuming, and advanced sewing techniques. Students interested in furthering their skills should enquire with staff in the shop.
Catalog Description
Practical experience working on costumes for Theatre & Dance department productions. Study and execution of basic costume construction techniques and materials, tools, and equipment use. Skills development, professional etiquette. Safety training requirement.
Meet the Staff
Rebecca Valentino (she/her/hers) — Costume Shop Supervisor
Rebecca has 30 years experience designing and creating costumes for the stage. Design work includes working with various companies including The Performance Network of Ann Arbor, The Purple Rose Theatre, The Michigan Shakespeare Festival, and recent work at Capital Stage, 42nd Street Moon and Solano College Theater, where she also served as the Costume Shop Supervisor from 2005–2012 and Adjunct Professor of Costume and Theatre from 2007–2020. Notably, Rebecca has received numerous nominations and awards for her design work in the Solano, Sacramento and Bay Area regions. Rebecca loves tailoring, millinery, costume crafts, period costuming and designing for theatre.
