Audition Requirements, Fall Quarter 2026
The CRN number to register for MUS 141 will be given to all applicants admitted into the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra AFTER the auditions are completed.
General Auditions
- Two contrasting pieces (one fast, one slow). Ideally, one of these should be an orchestral excerpt. Orchestral excerpts from Shostakovich 11 are preferred — see below — especially for returning UCDSO members, but not required
- Expect some sight-reading
Audition for Principal Positions
- Work of your choice (concerto movement or equivalent)
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts (at least one from Shostakovich 11 — see "Suggested Excerpts" below)
Expect to play about 1–2 pages of your prepared pieces; you may be stopped in audition due to time constraints.

10-minute appointment slots are available Monday, Sept. 21, and Tuesday, Sept. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. (exact times shown while scheduling) in Room 1148 (“Strings Studio”), Pitzer Center. Percussionists should choose the percussion option on sign up to see available options.
