Track 3: Music Performance

Requirements

• You can declare as a music major without auditioning.
• Enroll in lessons with a lessons instructor. We encourage performance-track students to work continuously with a department instructor throughout your time at UC Davis. 
• Join a department ensemble.

Recital Preparation Course

Enroll in the recital preparatory course prior to the junior recital. *

• Before enrolling in the recital prep class, students should:
  • be a declared music major who has completed Music 7A 
  • be recommended to the class by their applied teacher (instrument or voice teacher)
  • have completed 3 or more quarters of lessons 
• The recital prep class is offered Winter and Spring quarters on Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Pitzer Center.
• The student’s applied teacher will determine if the student should schedule the junior recital.
• Some students may need to seek alternatives to scheduling a recital. The recital prep class and lessons can be very useful in preparing a student to give a lecture/demonstration (as part of their Music 195 senior capstone project for the theory, history, or ethnomusicology track).

Public Recitals

• Give a public recital during both your junior and senior years. You must work closely with your applied instructor to prepare for and schedule both of your recitals.

Schedule options

Four-Year Schedule

• Freshman/sophomore year: enroll in lessons with a department instructor.
• Junior year: 30-minute junior recital.
• Senior year: 60-minute senior recital.

Transfer and Two-Year Plans

• Transfer students should enroll in lessons with a department instructor and plan on taking the recital preparatory course during Winter Quarter, prior to their junior recital.
• 2nd year: 60-minute recital.
