Roustabout: The Great Circus Trainwreck
Arena Theatre, Wright Hall
Playwright Jay Torrence uses the true story of a train wreck in the early 20th century that killed 80 circus performers and weaves it into remarkable yet gut-wrenching theatre.
In the middle of the night on June 22, 1918 a train filled with performers from Hagenbeck Wallace Circus was demolished by a military troop train when its engineer fell asleep at the controls. Through historical fact, fiction, dance, hand puppets and meta theatricality, Roustabout: The Great Circus Trainwreck brings to life the stories of these glorious and tragic circus performers.
