“Written and Directed By…” FESTIVAL
Original Student Work Festival

A festival of original student work, directed, designed, and performed by students will take place in Wyatt Pavilion Theatre October 31-November 2, 2025. Each production will be offered at least twice during the run, depending upon the total number and run time of successful proposals. Attention to staging and design, level of investment and production resources will be decided after the initial programming; many design elements will be shared across the works.

Monday May 12: Completed Proposals due by 5pm submitted electronically

Proposal includes

  1. creative resume
  2. A 1-2 page proposal that addresses
    1. Aesthetic vision, rationale, and goal of the project (What/why/how)
    2. Proposer’s experience, knowledge and capacity to realize the project (preparation, commitment and knowledge)
    3. Desirable production resources (feasibility)
    4. Preliminary plan for further development
  3. 3rd draft of original student scripted short plays ~5-25 minutes (~5-25 script pages) or original monologues ~3-10 minutes (~1-4 script pages)

 

May 13-26 Committee Review of Proposals

A select committee of faculty, staff and students will review all submissions and curate appropriate work for the festival based on

• the quality and preparation of the proposal/script

• relevance for departmental curricular goals and student learning

• meaningful potential for productive collaborative development

• feasibility of realization given resource limitations

• compelling synergy among work for festival programming

 

Tuesday May 27 Notification of accepted proposals

 

Monday June 3 Deadline for signed student commitments due for participation as a writer

           

Writers will be expected to further develop their work over the summer. They will be required to enroll DRA 160B in the Fall, which will combine a focus on developing their festival work along with other writing projects; other students will also be in the DRA 160B course.  Writers are encouraged but not required to enroll in “Writing for the Stage” Spring 2025 DRA 198 2 units CRN 36411 Thursday 4:10-5:30 in Wright 101 (Lab A)

 

Acting and Directing students will be expected to enroll in DRA 127B in the Fall.

 

Opportunities to participate in a more traditional 2-unit DRA 180D crew capacity or other 180B/C production roles will be available.
