Heghnar Watenpaugh will be speaking in Berlin on July 24 at the “Causality or Contingency: What Keeps Culture Going” Joint Workshop at Frei Universität. In a panel chaired by Tufan Acil, Heghnar will discuss “Survivor Objects: Cultural Heritage after Genocide.”

Katharine Burnett, Founding Director of the Global Tea Initiative, was awarded the Best Tea Health Advocate 2018 at the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas. The Best Tea Health Advocate is the WTE’s educational award.

According to Rona Tison of Ito En, Katharine “is not only a Tea Health Advocate, but has founded & spearheaded the Global Tea Initiative at UC Davis to ensure that tea is sustained for all of us… Thanks to her vision and dedication, she is committed to preserving what we are all passionate about. The future and culture of tea.”

Design and Art History double major Jennifer Place has received national attention for winning the LEDvance Student Design, an annual competition in which students are tasked with designing, developing and producing a lighting fixture prototype.

Art History major Gary Calcagno will present his paper “Imperial Presence: Japanese Colonial Architecture in Seoul” at the 9th Annual Bay Area Undergraduate Art History Research Symposium. Congratulations Gary!

A scandal at the Nanjing Museum involving a Ming masterpiece, millions in laundered money and missing art donations recently set off alarms in the art world. Correspondent Richard Spencer of The Times (London) talked to Professor Katharine Burnett about the inquiry and scandal in his article “The Chinese museum, the Ming masterpiece and the missing millions.” Burnett  recently published a book on the collector Pang Yuanji (Shaping Chinese Art History: Pang Yuanji and His Painting Collection, 2020).
