Alum Catharine Anderson (MA ‘98) is participating in the Pence Gallery’s Art History Lecture Series with her talk ”Victorian Art & The Natural World.” This lecture, which explores the importance of nature in Victorian art, examining landscape architecture and the language of flowers and plants in paintings, is free and online on Saturday, May 8, 2021 from 2-3 pm.

Congratulations to Professor John Lopez — a 2021 recipient of the ACLS (American Council of Learned Societies) Fellowship. The Fellowship will support work on his manuscript The Aquatic Metropolis: Mapping Nature and Urban Aesthetics at Viceregal Mexico City. Recipients receive funding to support six to twelve consecutive months devoted to full-time research and/or writing between July 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022.

Alum Mariah Briel (MA ‘18) is participating in the Pence Gallery’s Art History Lecture Series with her talk on “Mapping in the Modern World.” This lecture, which looks at the history of maps as art and investigates how maps work as markers (both literally and symbolically) of power and identity, is free and online on Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 2-3 pm.

Alum Daniel Trejo (BA, Art Studio and Art History, 2013) is participating in the exhibition “Doubt the Edges” at Monte Vista Projects in Downtown LA. “Doubt the Edges,” which features new works by Trejo and Timothy McMullen, is on view by appointment until April 25.

Trejo currently holds a residency at Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento.

Professor Talinn Grigor will particpate in the Seattle Art Museum and Asian Art Museum’s Virtual Satruday lecture series on Sites of Memory in Asia: Remembrance and Redemption on April 17.

Professor Katharine Burnett will introduce the history of growing and tasting tea in China in her upcoming lecture “Tea in the History and Culture of China.” The lecture on Wednesday, March 10 from 1:30-3:00 pm, will be available via Zoom (password 934073)

Professor Talinn Grigor will present a lecture at the UC Irvine School of Humanities on “Cosmopolitanism and the Modern Movement in Iran.” The virtual lecture will take place Tuesday, March 8 from 11-12 (PST).

Professor Katharine Burnett has received a 2021 Chancellor’s Award for International Engagement. Burnett received her award at the sixth annual UC Davis International Connections Reception, hosted by Global Affairs on March 4, which brought together the UC Davis community in an online forum to celebrate several award and grant programs, including the 2021 Chancellor’s Awards for International Engagement, presented by Chancellor Gary S. May.

Professor Talinn Grigor recently contributed to a new UC Davis podcast called The Story of Iran. 

Are you tired of eating lunch alone? Join Justina Martino (M.A., art history, ‘15) Public Engagement and Outreach Manager) and Brooklynn Johnson (M.F.A. art studio, ‘19) for a Lunchtime Art Chat this Friday, February 27 at 12:00 pm PST at the Verge Center for the Arts. 

In this new series, host Justina will introduce regional artists. Each chat will feature a brief interview with the artist, a slide show of the artist’s art and inspirations, and an audience Q&A. 

Professor Michael Yonan will present a paper at a virtual conference sponsored by the University of Kassel, Germany, the University of Rome, and the University of Barcelona focused on “Europe and the Ancient Near East: Reception and Construction of Images of the Ancient Near East since the 17th Century.” Professor Yonan will discuss “Ancient Near Eastern Themes in German Porcelain of the 18th Century” on the final day of the conference in the Architecture / Arts & Crafts / Everyday Culture session which runs from March 3-4, 2021.

Professor Katharine Burnett, Art History, and faculty director, Global Tea Initiative for the Study of Tea Culture and Science Chinese Art and Culture, is the author of Shaping Chinese Art History: Pang Yuanji and His Painting Collection which has just been released by Cambria Press.

Professor Alexandra Sofroniew will speak at the Pence Gallery for their Art History Lecture Series on “Homemade Votive Offerings: Giving Gifts to the Gods in Ancient Italy.” Her lecture will be Saturday, January 16 from 2-3 pm (PST) via Zoom.

Alumna Jennifer Dasal (BA ‘02) and her newly published book Art Curious: Stories of the Unexpected, Slightly Odd, and Strangely Wonderful in Art History (Penguin, September 2020) are featured in the latest College of Letters and Science newsletter. Dasal discusses her book and her motivation to “engage those who don’t like, understand or care about art.”  Dasal’s book is based on her popular podcast ArtCurious.
