With the expansion of the Gorman Museum of Native American Art at the University of California, Davis into the new museum in 2023, the additional space fostered new gifts from private collections across the country. A selection of these artworks is showcased in “Gifts from the Heart: New Acquisitions at the Gorman.” The exhibition features a selection of artworks by more than 40 artists in a range of media including sculpture, painting, prints, mixed media, ceramics, basketry and carving. These works are part of the nearly 300 pieces of Native American art that the museum has accepted as gifts valued at over $1 million.
Also, on view is “BDT: Brian D. Tripp with Charley Burns & Leatrice Mikkelsen,” which includes original drawings and paintings by Tripp alongside pieces by Burns and Mikkelsen. All the pieces in the installation are new gifts to museum’s permanent collection from Dorothea Theodoratus and the Mikkelsen Kuimelis Family.
The Gorman Museum of Native American Art is located on the university campus on Old Davis Road. Hours: Wednesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Free and open to all.
