Alumnus Dahlak Brathwaite Directs “Yankee Bajan” in Barbados

Alumnus and winter 2024 Granada Artist-in-Residence Dahlak Brathwaite (B.A., English and theatre and dance, ’08) recently directed the original play Yankee Bajan at Errol Barrow Center for Creative Imagination, Walcott Warner Theatre, University of the West Indies, Barbados.

A unique collaboration between Barbadian artists and Barbadian descendants in the United States, the play with music written by Linda Parris-Bailey focuses on an African American family’s response to racism and violence in the US and their sojourn to repatriate to their ancestral home in Barbados.

Brathwaite returns to UC Davis in Feb. for a five-week hip-hop workshop of a new musical performance piece.
