AHI 190A/290 Seminar: Mediterranean Antiquity (4)
Winter 2015: Graecia Capta: the Legacy of Greece
in Roman Art
Lecture/discussion—3 hours; term paper. Prerequisite: Art History major, minor, or other significant training in Art History recommended. Class size limited to 25 students; for majors, minors, other advanced students.
Study of a broad problem or theoretical issue in art,
architecture, or material culture. Intensive reading,
discussion, research, writing.
This seminar will explore the ways in which Greek art and
architecture influenced the creation of Roman art. We will
focus on one of the most basic questions that arises in the study
of Roman art: what makes Roman art Roman? It is well known
that in both subject matter and style, Roman art borrowed heavily
from Greek art. We want to consider the nature and extent
of these borrowings, and examine the ways in which the Romans
adapted the visual legacy of the Greek work to make it
distinctively Roman.
