Professor Strazdes publishes article in Winterthur Portfolio

Professor Diana Strazdes’ recent article “The Transformative Power of Spaces: Rembrandt Peale’s Patriae Pater and Lafayette in Philadelphia” has been published in the latest issue of the Winterthur Portfolio (Volume 56, Number 2-3).

Her article takes a look at Rembrandt Peale’s portrait of George Washington  painted for the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824 visit to Philadelphia. The painting, “Patriae Pater,” was a key element in the celebratory decorations devised by architect William Strickland for the old statehouse, now Independence Hall.
