Stephen Bingen

Stephen Bingen serves as Head Audio / Visual Engineer for the UC Davis Department of Music. He manages audio and video recording, livestreaming and sound reinforcement, as well as the restoration and digitization of the department’s audiovisual archives. He also supports faculty and students in their research and creative work in composition and music technology.

Bingen studied music education and horn performance at the Sacramento State School of Music under Pete Nowlen. As a hornist, he has performed with the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, Camellia Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles, and has appeared as a featured soloist with the California All-State High School Choir, Capitol Section Honor Choir, and Symphony D’Oro. Bingen is also an experienced music educator and jazz ensemble director and has appeared as a guest director for the American River College Summer Jazz Workshop on multiple occasions.

As a recording engineer, Bingen specializes in location recording of classical and jazz music, with releases on labels including Bridge Records, Centaur Records, and Orange Mountain Music. His recording work includes projects featuring music by Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, among them Philip Glass: A Common Time, executive-produced by Glass and selected as an Apple Music Classical A-List editor’s pick. Bingen is a Voting Member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs) and serves on its Producers and Engineers Wing.
