Bio
Colombian multimedia composer, drummer, and improviser interested in the creation of sound, image, light, and movement through experimentation and technology. He has composed works for instrumental, electronic, video, real-time lighting, and mixed-media formats, exploring different models of musical notation and various relationships between composition and improvisation. As a drummer, he has performed with several Bogotá-based bands and has been actively involved in experimental, extreme and improvised music projects.
 
Juan studied composition and drum performance at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá and earned a master’s degree in Multimedia Composition from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. His teachers have included Alexander Schubert, Georg Hajdu, Julián Valdivieso, Sergio Cote, and Jorge Sepúlveda. Before beginning his doctoral studies, he worked for several years at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, where he taught music theory, composition, and music technology and was involved in artistic research and interdisciplinary projects. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Composition and Theory at the UC Davis.
