Annabeth Rosen

Directly confronting the aesthetic and physical relationships between sculptural form and painterly surface, Rosen’s work is centered on the density and intensity of accumulating the objects, marks and ideas of eccentric abstraction. Sculptures are stacked, constructed, broken wired back together and rebuilt, constituting a state of flux. That process — the breaking, wiring, and putting back together — becomes part of an interior process as well as a means of fabrication. 

Annabeth Rosen studied at Alfred University (B.F.A. 1978) and the Cranbrook Academy of Art (M.F.A. 1981), and has gone on to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since 1997 she has held the Robert Arneson Endowed Chair at the University of California Davis.

Rosen’s work has been widely exhibited in the U.S, abroad and online. Most recently a new body of work of sculptures and drawings opened at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. From 2017 through 2020, a twenty-year touring survey opened at the Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Her work is in the collection of SFMOMA, The LA County Museum of Art, The Oakland Museum, The Denver Art Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and many public and private collections. She recently completed an installation in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for the US Art in Embassies program. Her work is represented by P∙P∙O∙W Gallery in New York. 

Rosen has received multiple grants and awards, a Pew Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, a UC Davis Chancellor’s Fellowship, and a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award. More recently Rosen has been the recipient of USA Artist Fellowship Award, Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Award  from the Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, named alumni of the year at Cranbrook Academy of Art, named a fellow of the American Craft Council and awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.
