Faculty, Lecturers and Graduate Composer Alumni Participate in Festival of New American Music

UC Davis music faculty, lecturers, and graduate composer alumni will participate in this year’s virtual Festival of New American Music, taking place at Sacramento State University’s School of Music, Nov. 7–14.

Their concerts include a solo harpsichord recital by UC Davis lecturer in music Faythe Vollrath, on Nov. 13, at 3:00 p.m.

Also on Nov.13 will be the “Local Voices” program, which takes place at 7:00 p.m. It will feature

  • Chris Castro (Ph.D. ‘18): Beethausenstro—Castockhoven, premiered by piano duo HereNowHear (Ryan McCullough and Andrew Zhou) at Cornell in December 2020
  • Josiah Catalan (Ph.D. candidate): Sages’ Gardens, premiered by soprano Stephanie Lamprea in May 2021
  • Laurie San Martin (Professor and Chair of Music at UC Davis): Selections from Seven Pines, premiered by the Radius Ensemble in 2019
  • Ryan Suleiman (Ph.D. ‘20): The Robin, premiered by ‘distanced’ soprano Nikki Einfeld and the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in October 2021

On Nov. 12, at 7:00 p.m., the opera As One, composed by Laura Kaminsky in 2014, will be livestreamed by—among others—UC Davis lecturers in music Dagenais Smiley, violin, and Susan Lamb Cook, cello. As One tells the story of the transgendered Hannah, from her small town youth years to her college years. This performance of the opera was recorded and edited by UC Davis Head Audio Engineer Stephen Bingen at Sacramento State.

All of these concerts will be streamed via the Sacramento State School of Music Facebook page.
