Appreciation and Adaptation: Homage to Global Textiles
January 23 – April 18, 2020
The exhibition features traditional textiles from Africa, Asia and South America collected by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. These items have inspired contemporary design works by UC Davis students that are also showcased, highlighting the continuing relevance of traditional cultures and how they drive design thinking in new directions.

Shape Up: Case Studies in Fashion Making
September 23 - December 8, 2019
Showcasing traditional ceremonial costumes from Africa and Japan and western garments from the UC Davis Jo Ann C. Stabb Design Collection, this exhibition reveals the hidden structures, patterns and shaping methods that underlie fashion creation. Blending functionality and style, three sections— “Tailored Silhouettes,” “Untrimmed Contours” and “New Dimensions”— acknowledge the long-lasting artisanship behind how clothing was shaped and its influential role in today’s design practice. This lively survey of senior undergraduate student talent and creativity reflects the multi-disciplinary breadth of the Department of Design. The design of the exhibition is led by a student design team and themed each year.
