Film Premiere & Special Lecture on Contemporary Creators

DES 001 preview
Location: MedSci 180c
Join us for a free premiere screening of a new film about art in our times. Plus, see a preview lecture that gives a sample of what you’ll experience if you enroll in DES001 “Introduction to Design” (spaces available for Winter quarter – register now). We will preview the new 7th season of the PBS television series Art21: Art in the 21st Century with segments about artists Tania Bruguera and Wolfgang Laib from the Art21 episode titled “Legacy.” DES001 explores, in part, the areas where art and design overlap. Bruguera’s activist art parallels the work of designers creating “social design” or engaging with design as a tool for social change. Laib creates temporary architectures with natural materials like beeswax that are a feast for the senses. His works made of pollen use it as a naturally-occurring pigment, a topic we consider when we treat color theory in DES001.
Wednesday’s preview screening will be punctuated by discussions.
As a counterpoint to the Art21 screening, a brief lecture by
Professor James Housefield will consider ways that the work of
artists James Turrell and the designers Charles & Ray Eames offer
tools to aid in contemplating immensity.Together, the work of
Bruguera, Laib, Turrell, and the Eames Office asks us to consider
“what can art and design do in the 21st century?”
