Professor Watenpaugh to discuss survivor object at forum on cultural heritage and property
Professor Heghnar Watenpaugh is participating in a forum exploring issues of heritage — antiquities, landscapes, sites, ancestral remains, or immaterial cultural expressions – as “cultural assets” in Istanbul, Turkey from Oct. 3-4, 2024.
The conference, “Beyond Property: Cultural Heritage, Ownership and the Making of Knowledge,” examines how protection of cultural heritage is complicated by notions of property and ownership, possession and dispossession. Watenpaugh will discuss ”Captive Sites and Survivor Objects: State Power, Property, and the Production of the Cultural Heritage of Minoritized Groups.”
“Beyond Property” is organized by BEYONDREST, the Forum Transregionale Studien, Europa im Nahen Osten in Berlin, and in cooperation with the Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes (IFEA) and the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII) and is held at the IFEA – Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes, Istanbul.
