Alum David Beatty Authors Memoir
Alum David Beatty (MFA, dramatic arts, ‘05) is the author of The Appetite of Giants: Mostly True Stories and Some Exaggerations, a collection of funny and heartfelt essays follows his journey from a Southern California childhood filled with imagination and adventure to a lifelong love of theater, filmmaking, and the arts. The book features stories about family, creativity, and even a hungry 25-foot-tall Giant who lives in a cave in Kansas.
The book also reflects on Beatty’s years earning an MFA at UC Davis and, in particular, on the profound influence of Theater and Dance professor and choreographer Della Davidson, whose mentorship helped shape both his education and his lifelong work in theater.
Beatty has been working in theater, film, TV and new media for over 30 years and has performed all over the United States at national repertory companies, storefront theaters, touring companies and more. On stage he has appeared in many productions including the west coast premiere of Sam Shepard’s Simpatico, the US Premiere of Mark Ravenhill’s The Cut and the U.S. premiere of Love & Money by Dennis Kelly. Film and TV credits include Criminal Minds, The Aftertaste, Book of Secrets, Ten Rabbits, Social Distance and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, to name a few.
He has written and created dozens of original projects through his production company, DOUBLE YELLOW LINE FILMS which include Hello Alice Bloom, Surviving New Year’s, GET SPY, The Wasteland, Skeleton Love, The Human Project, and The White Room.
Beatty received his BA in Theater from Adams State University.
