Professor, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain
Host: Professor Katia Vega (2025)
Maria Cuevas Riaño’s expertise lies in the design and critical development of hybrid ecosystems at the intersection of art, science, and technology. In particular, she focuses on Data Art and the Poetics of Bio Data, where she explores how biosensors and biometric tools can be used to measure and interpret aesthetic-sensory experiences. These systems allow for the creation of interactive environments that respond to the emotional and physiological states of participants, fostering new modes of embodiment and perception within contemporary artistic practice.
In parallel, she works with Cultural Analytics and Poetics of Big Data, applying AI methods—such as Machine Learning and Deep Learning—to analyze and visualize heterogeneous cultural datasets. Her research combines conceptual and technical approaches to explore how data from science, language, society, or perception can be transformed into meaningful artistic languages. This work contributes to a critical and creative understanding of how data flows shape individual and collective identities in digital cultures.
Project collaboration with Professor Vega:
Research project Data Art. Design and Implementation of Interactive Bio-Data Ecosystems explores artistic practices that use data as the core of intersubjective discourse, with a specific focus on Bio-Data. It examines information gathered from interactive systems and artifacts equipped with bio-sensors located on living organisms or in their surrounding environments. The biometric data extracted provides insights into the identity of these living spaces and beings, often revealing otherwise imperceptible characteristics
