Design Students Contribute to a Special Cafe Project
Four Design students are contributing to the creation of a new cafe that will be staffed by differently-abled adults. Named “Mosaic Coffee & Tea,” this nonprofit venture is being spearheaded by the Davis Community Church, which will provide a space for the cafe on its downtown Davis campus. Mosaic will not charge its patrons a fixed amount for food and drinks, but simply, will ask them to “gift” what they can.
In December, Jessica Chen, Jada Gilbert, Melyssa Lee and Sang Won Kang presented their work to Pastor Bill Habicht and a team of community activists and volunteers involved in the project. Based on previous discussions and feedback, the students proposed layout options, finishes and original designs for the front counter and seating. Colorful computer-generated perspectives of the cafe will be integrated into the fundraising effort to make Mosaic a reality. Working with Associate Professor Mark Kessler, this group study project is continuing into Winter Quarter, 2016.
