LIVESTREAM LINK

Ahmad Gharbieh, co-founder of Beirut Urban Lab, a collaborative and interdisciplinary research space, will be the fall 2022 guest for the Alberini Family Speaker Series in Design at UC Davis. His talk is titled “Visualizing the Urban: Experiments from Beirut.”

This talk will present a number of mapping projects by Beirut Urban Lab and discuss strategies of visualizing episodic geographies from the city’s recent past.

Gharbieh is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Graphic Design Program at the Department of Architecture and Design, American University of Beirut. At Beirut Urban Lab, he leads the Critical Mapping track. His scholarly work in/on critical cartography explores data visualization as a method of studying, representing and analyzing spatial phenomena. His research concerns many subjects including security and militarization, practices of public space, building development, state and sectarian governance, refugeeness, labor, and urban recovery, among others, and has been published/exhibited in academic and public venues alike.

The speaker series, supported through an endowment by the Carlos and Andrea Alberini Family Foundation, brings renowned innovators and thinkers in design to campus and in virtual formats to inspire students and encourage community engagement and learning.

Organized by the UC Davis Department of Design. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.
