Art as Translation
Exhibition at Nelson Gallery
March 10 – 21, 2014, Nelson Gallery
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 13, 1-4 PM
Curatorial walkthrough and live readings begin at 1:30pm
ART as TRANSlation, Co-curated by Nicole Budrovich and Rachel Du explores the “translation” between text and image in select artworks by Albrecht Dürer, Ernst Barlach, and Nathan Oliveira, which evoke the poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Saint John the Apostle. More than mere illustrations, these artworks offer another vision and version of the texts, revealing the different ways artists “translate” literature into a visual form. Through the presentation of artworks, texts, and audio, ART as TRANSlation invites the visitor to engage with these “translations,” mediating between author and artist, text and image.
ART as TRANSlation is one of two exhibition-making projects for AHI 401: Curatorial Methods taught by Professor Susette Min.
ART as TRANSlation is made possible in part with the support of the UC Davis Art History Program and Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
