When you say, “Chicano,” you have something in mind. Who is a Chicano? Is a Chicano a Mexican born in the United States or throughout the western hemisphere? 

Alum Manuel Fernando Rios (MFA 2011) engages this debate in the exhibition he curates — “Who Gets to Call It Chicano Art” at the Axis Gallery. Rios and the participating artists who consider themselves Chicanos/as attempt to spark conversations, arguments, consciousness-raising, outcry and collaboration in “Who Gets to Call It Chicano Art”, revealing that Chicano art is just as complex, if not more, than the actual word “Chicano.”
