Graduate student opens solo show at Gallery 1855 in Davis

M.F.A. candidate April Camlin’s (M.F.A., ‘24) first west-coast solo exhibit — “Learning New Powers” – comes to Davis on October 6 at Gallery 1855, Davis Cemetery and Arboretum.

“Learning New Powers” presents a series of wreaths made in commemoration of a close friend who lost a battle with a rare and aggressive breast cancer. Camlin constructed her wreaths with scavenged materials: found tree branches, plants and jewelry fragments, hand-twisted cords, and second-hand candle wax. The long history and custom of the funerary wreath attracted Camlin to the form which ”evokes the ouroboros, an ancient alchemical symbol representing the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth that lies at the heart of many mystery traditions.”

Dedicated to the memory of Jessica Green, David Breaux, and Karim Abou Najm, “Learning New Powers” opens Friday, Oct. 13 for a reception from 1-3 p.m. A closing event is scheduled for Saturday Oct. 28 from 4-6 p.m. which will take place outside and feature a guided meditative experience through the cemetery grounds with the Davis Threshold Choir providing a singing circle.
