Annabel December Sofia
Performance Studies
Annabel’s primary reaseach is on the dance movement therapy (DMT), particularly the application and the techiniques of DMT in healthcare. How should we across the floor of the ward? What are the effective techniques the dance therapist can employ to “move” the patients’ maladaptive bodies and their skeptical minds? What are the safety measures the dance therapists need to take to protect themselves during challenging, difficult, and unpreditable sessions? How can psychoanalysis and dance/movement therapy analysis better collaborate and complement each other in order to bring in meaningful and more holistic changes for the patients? Annabel delves into these questions deeply.
Annabel is also a temple dance researcher. Her secondary research is dedicated to Dunhuang dance which draws its inspiration from the Dunhuang frescoes found in Mogao Caves on the Silk Road in Gansu, China. Through the lenses of Chinese antiquity, Buddhist arts, and embodied divinity depicted in Mogao sculptures and murals, she investigates the tantalizing forces and hidden threads that bridge human artistry and human spirituality in medieval China.
Annabel was educated at dance conservatory in her youth and was classically trained in Chinese folk dance, Chinese classical dance, Ballet, and Indian classical dance (Odissi). She holds a BA in Arts Management (Music and Dance) and a MA in Dance. Previously, Annabel was the principal dancer and art director at NNTV(CN).
